Mark Breland is an Olympic gold medalist, five time New York Golden Gloves champion, accomplished actor, and philanthropist.
Mark was still growing up in Brooklyn’s Tompkin’s projects when he saw Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frasier live at Madison Square Garden. It was then, at the age of seven, that he knew he wanted to box. He started out by going for early morning runs and training with family friend Elijah “Goat” Best in the evening. A few months later, Goat took Mark to Broadway Gym, where he met George Washington - the man who would train Mark his entire career.
At the age of 15, Mark won the junior Olympics, marking the first major triumph in his career. From there, he went on to fight in the New York Golden Golves, winning five consecutive titles with twenty-four fights and twenty-three knock outs--sixteen of which were in the first round. Then, in 1984, Mark became an Olympic gold medal welterweight champion at the summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Today, Mark trains professional boxers and is focused on establishing the Mark Breland Foundation as a major resource for New York City’s youth.
